Join MCE at this year’s Summit on Children and Youth, which will now take place on May 10th. The transition of our communities from economies focused on manufacturing to economies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields has changed how we build our next generation workforce. The benefits of this changing economy have been unevenly distributed across labor markets and the disparity has affected urban, minority communities disproportionately. Ending this disparity will take an approach that:
- Creates enthusiasm for STEM programs among younger students;
- Encourages passion among youth to harness the power of STEM;
- Promotes innovative instruction; and
- Furthers the opportunities for partnerships between private sector companies and institutions of higher learning.
This year’s summit focuses on ensuring that our communities are prepared to fill the employment opportunities that we know will be available in our region in the coming years, including health care, information and communications technology (ICT), biotech and many other vocational professions that are critical to a highly functioning society. The day will be comprised of inspiring speakers and presentations from established programs throughout the Bay Area, as well as breakout session to discuss challenges and opportunities and to share important information.
The late afternoon and evening portion of the event will feature a college and career fair and resource village for students, teachers and parents. This fair will include workshops to build critical skills such as networking, interviewing, writing cover letters, and building your personal brand, as well as presentations from businesses, community partners and entrepreneurs, and opportunities for students and teachers to interact directly with them.
